What are the best alternatives to Amazon's wishlist addon?

Jun 3, 2023

In 2023 Amazon removed the ability to add items from other stores to your Amazon Wishlists, Gift lists and Registries. This means you can no longer use your Amazon List to compare and keep track of all the items you're considering buying (learn more about what happened to the Amazon Assistant extension).

It also means that if you are creating a Gift list for a special occasion such as a Baby Registry or Birthday Gift list, you are now limited to only the products on Amazon. While Amazon has a wide selection, not many top brands are available and certainly no independent boutiques. This is especially true when it comes to apparel and interiors. I for one do not want to be limited to the generic products on Amazon, so I needed to find a replacement.

Fortunately, I've found plenty of great universal wishlist and registry-making tools you can use instead!

To help save you some time, I've spent hours testing and reviewing each of them so you don't have to. I hope this article will make choosing the right wishlist to replace your decommissioned 'Amazon Assistant' or 'Add to Amazon Wish List' Chrome add-on a breeze.

Find my in-depth reviews of the 8 most popular wishlist alternatives to Amazon below.

The best universal wishlist platforms & browser extensions reviewed

What I love about modern wishlist-making tools is you can add items directly from any store using a browser extension. Kind of like Pinterest, but for shopping and gift lists. This means I don't need to copy and paste links or product information manually. If you haven't used a browser extension before, you are really missing out. They are almost like apps for your browser; helping make you far more organised and your life a whole lot easier.

Given almost everyone uses Chrome these days, I've reviewed each of the platforms and their accompanying browser extension using Chrome. Chrome extensions also work on Firefox, Edge and many other browsers - just not Safari.

I've listed the wishlist tools in order of their star rating on Chrome, from highest to lowest.

Moonsift review

Chrome extension: 45 reviews, 5 stars

Moonsift is great for making personal wishlists and gift registries. Saving items from different retailers works perfectly; always picking up the right images, price and description of the products. Moonsift was the only tool I tried that tracked price changes and offered to alert me when prices dropped. Of all the wishlists, it's easily the most aesthetically pleasing. Everything is laid out on a clean canvas and the UX is easy to follow. If you want to use it on mobile there is an iOS app, but unfortunately no Android app yet.

  • ✅ Add items directly from any retailer with their Chrome extension

  • ✅ Visitors can mark what they have bought (just set to 'Registry')

  • ✅ Aesthetic design

  • ✅ Price tracking

  • ✅ Easy to choose which list to save to and move between lists

  • ✅ Chrome Extension updated in the last month, 28 reviews, 5 stars.

  • ✅ iOS (4.5 star rating)

  • ❌ Android App

GiftHero review

Chrome extension: 3 reviews, 5 stars (caveat - last review was in 2018)

Gift Hero's website works well, but the browser extension is a bit of let down. The price was often incorrect or not picked up at all. Sometimes I was also unable to save an image of the product and the only option given was to upload my own image. It only has 3 reviews on the Chrome web store and the extension has not been updated since 2021, so I feel there is a slight risk it could be decommissioned like Amazon's.

  • 🆗 Add items directly from (some) retailers with their Chrome extension

  • ✅ Visitors can mark what they have bought

  • 🆗 Aesthetically ok

  • ❌ No price tracking

  • ✅ Easy to choose which list to save to and move between lists

  • 🆗 Chrome Extension not updated since 2021, 3 reviews.

  • 🆗 iOS (2.8 star rating)

  • ✅ Android App

Things to get me review

Chrome extension: 10 reviews, 4.5 stars

Things to get me is designed more for gift lists than to be used as a personal wishlist, but it can still make do for both. One thing it's not particularly good at is price. It never gave me the price info when I added products from retailers, so I always had to go back and add that manually. Personally, I don't find this an ugly site, but nor is it nice to look at when comparing items.

  • ✅ Add items directly from retailers with their Chrome extension

  • ❌ Need to add key product info manually (price & image are not automatic)

  • ✅ Visitors can mark what they have bought

  • 🆗 Aesthetically ok

  • ❌ No price tracking

  • ❌ Difficult to save items to different wishlists

  • ❌ Difficult to move between wishlists

  • ✅ Chrome Extension updated in May 2023, 10 reviews, 4.5 stars

  • ✅ iOS app (4-star rating)

  • ✅ Android app

Giftster review

Chrome extension: 9 reviews, 4.5 stars.

Established in 2009, Giftster is your old-school option. I was frustrated at having to log in separately to the extension to use it and like some of the other extensions, it often did not collect the price info, which I think is key when saving products. Being old it can be slow and has a very old-fashioned look. But other than that, it has all of the functionality you need for a personal wishlist or gift list.

  • ✅ Add items directly from retailers with their Chrome extension

  • 🆗 Often need to add price info manually

  • ✅ Visitors can mark what they have bought

  • ❌ Not aesthetically pleasing

  • ❌ No price tracking

  • ✅ Easy to choose which list to save to and move between lists

  • 🆗 Chrome Extension not updated since 2022, 9 reviews, 4.5 stars

  • ✅ iOS app (3.4-star rating)

  • ✅ Android app

WishList review

Chrome extension: 12 reviews, 4 stars

WishList.com is reasonably good at saving items from retailers. Although it rarely gets the price correct it does allow you to select which image of the product you want. The big letdown for WishList.com is how poor the design is. Not only aesthetically, but the UX can be hard to navigate,

  • ✅ Add items directly from retailers with their Chrome extension

  • ✅ Visitors can mark what they have bought (just make it a 'registry')

  • ❌ Not aesthetically pleasing

  • ❌ No price tracking

  • ✅ Easy to choose which list to save to and move between lists

  • 🆗 Chrome Extension not updated since 2022, 12 reviews, 4 stars.

  • 🆗 iOS exists, but not been updated since 2020

  • ✅ Android App

Wishbob review

Chrome extension: no reviews

Made by an Austrian company, Wishbob is designed specifically for gifting. Unfortunately, it does not work so well as a personal wishlist because it's hard to manage multiple lists. It is a well-functioning platform, but less attention has been given to design so it looks very outdated. Their extension has not been updated since 2021 so I see that as a risk that it could be decommissioned like Amazon.

  • ✅ Add items directly from retailers with their Chrome extension

  • ✅ Visitors can mark what they have bought

  • ✅ Functionally everything works well

  • ❌ Not aesthetically pleasing

  • ❌ No price tracking

  • ❌ Not designed to be used as a personal wishlist

  • ❌ Every time you add an item from a store you automatically get taken to the Wishbob website

  • ❌ Extension not updated since 2021 and no reviews

  • ✅ iOS app

  • ✅ Android app

My Wishlist review

Chrome extension: no reviews

My Wishlist is the first result I get when I search 'Wishlist maker' on Google - I guess because of the name. It's a simple tool that lets you add items to a wishlist, share that with friends and let them mark what they buy. The issue is the extension doesn't seem to work on most stores I try. I end up having to add all the information manually most of the time and often don't get an image of the product. It doesn't have price tracking and can be tricky to locate key functionality.

  • 🆗 Add items directly from some retailers with their Chrome extension

  • ✅ Visitors can mark what they have bought

  • 🆗 Aesthetically ok

  • ❌ No price tracking

  • ❌ Every time I add an item from a store I automatically get taken to the My Wishlist website

  • ❌ Hard to figure out how to use e.g. if I want to make a second wishlist I need to do that from settings

  • ❌ Extension not updated since 2022 and no reviews

  • ❌ No iOS app

  • ❌ No Android app

Gift Whale review

Chrome extension: no reviews

Perhaps not so surprisingly, Giftwhale is a 'Whale' themed wishlist. Nonetheless, it has most of the core functionality and you can create sub-accounts. The main issue is some websites just don't work with their browser extension or bookmarklet, and when that happens you need to copy and paste all the information manually. I can't seem to re-organise the order of items in my wishlist and they all sit in a long vertical list which makes it hard to compare items.

  • 🆗 Add items directly from most retailers with their Chrome extension

  • ✅ Visitors can mark what they have bought

  • 🆗 Aesthetically ok

  • ❌ Cannot re-order items

  • ❌ No price tracking

  • ✅ Easy to choose which list to save to and move between lists

  • ❌ Chrome Extension not updated since 2022, 0 reviews.

  • ❌ iOS app (there is a bookmarklet option)

  • ❌ Android app (there is a bookmarklet option)

Other Wishlists that didn't make the top 8

I found the below options simply not worth considering further as they lack core functionality such as being able to easily add items from other websites.

Favolis: does not have an extension, nor can it fetch product info from a link. This means I needed to manually copy and paste every bit of product info. Not worth considering for a personal wishlist and there are better options for gift lists.

Giftful: the browser extension is not really useable, so you must add all the items manually which takes ages and kind of defeats the point. There are many better options.

Dreamlist: has a bookmarklet rather than a browser extension. This is not too much of a problem, but the interface and UX of the site is also poor.

Conclusion: which wishlist maker is best?

If you are using Chrome, Firefox, Edge or other desktop browsers: Moonsift has the highest reviews and this was backed up by my testing. It was functionally the best and aesthetically has a clean easy-to-use design.

If you are using Safari desktop: Probably the most reliable option is Giftster for Safari desktop. If you find the interface design too outdated you could also consider Wishlist, Giftwhale or Wishbob.

If you are on Android: I was unable to test Android, but you have options in Things to get me, Giftster, Gift Hero, Wishlist and Wishbob.

If you are on iOS: Moonsift was the standout performer on iOS as well and had the highest overall App Store rating. Second was Things to get me.
